God Shows “Great and Mighty Things” at 2008 Mexico Scripture Blitz

During the Puebla, Mexico blitz, local Gideons, and the visiting International Scripture Blitz Team, realized God’s promise from the theme verse they selected for the blitz, “Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know” (Jeremiah 33:3). This team did indeed witness “great and mighty things” from the Lord.

At times, some directors in schools, universities and hospitals tried to hinder the blitz team’s Scripture distributions by various means. A few school directors actually made the Gideons move far away from the gates of the schools. However, many of the students—especially the middle school age group—sought out the blitz team once they saw some of their peers with the New Testaments. Despite the attempted hindrances, more than 90% of all the Scriptures distributed during the blitz were given to children and teens at schools and colleges.

Nurse Gives “Shot in the Arm” to Hospital Distribution

At one particular hospital, the Gideon and Auxiliary members were only allowed to stand outside the hospital gate, on the sidewalk, to offer Testaments to the doctors, nurses and other hospital workers during their shift changes. However one special nurse—who had been at the hospital for many years, and who was also a member of the same church as an Auxiliary participant of the local Gideon team—came out and told the team that she was going to do everything she could to get them inside the hospital. Soon, she had convinced the security guard to let the Auxiliary members go inside to continue their distribution.

A head nurse became very angry about what was then happening with the distribution inside the hospital, but this same Christian nurse witnessed to her and calmed her down to the point that she, too, took a New Testament. After witnessing this change of heart, many of the nurses began accepting Testaments.

Giving her best to the Lord, this Christian nurse was then able to convince half of the eight head nurses on the patient floors to let the Auxiliary members place hospital Testaments by each bed. Together, the Auxiliary members and several Gideons distributed 600 Medical Testaments and placed 300 Hospital Testaments by patient beds. The Lord definitely had his servant (that Christian nurse) in the right place at the right time for a “great and mighty” work.

Blitz Team Becomes Part of the “Prison Family”

Some of the blitz team members were also able to go to a large prison for an unusual distribution opportunity. They were told that over 1,000 male prisoners would be in an open yard where Scriptures could be handed out. At the same time, an Auxiliary member, accompanied by a local Gideon, was given permission to go to an open area of over 300 female prisoners.

With security concerns for these open-air arrangements, the blitz team prayed for extra protection. God answered their prayers in a delightful way.

It turned out that this was “family day” at the prison, so the male prisoners, in the open area, had their wives and children with them. This timely occurrence simply magnified the Scripture distribution possibilities and dispelled any security worries. There was a sense of peace over the prison during the entire “family day” distribution.

One of the Gideons was even allowed to preach for ten minutes and to present the plan of salvation to the prisoners and their families. Hundreds of men started coming to a tent set up for the Scripture distribution. In this tent, Gideons began to personally witness to several of the men, as well as pray with them and their families. A strong contingent of Christian prisoners then assisted the blitz team in their witnessing and gave additional encouragement to the prisoners visiting the tent.

In the meantime, the Auxiliary members, and the sole Gideon, who were with the female prisoners had another blessed experience. Sixteen women prayed to receive Christ.

The final counts for this prison distribution were 1,200 Testaments given to the men and 300 presented to female prisoners. As they prayed together outside the prison, the local Gideons began to weep over what they had seen God accomplish. They then committed to come back to the prison every six months, or more often, as they could get a permit to do so.

Don’t Miss the Mexico “Restaurant Revival”

There was also a “great and mighty” response to the witness of the blitz team at a local restaurant.
